Comeback Falls Short Against The Blues
The New York Islanders are off to a 1-2 starts to their year as they lost 5-0 at Columbus, beat Buffalo at home 6-3 and they fell at home to St Louis 3-2 in a shootout. The game was scoreless after one and the blues grabbed a 2-0 lead heading to the 3rd. The Isles then got a goal from Andrew Ladd (1st of year) to make it 2-1 and with a minute left in regulation, it was Anders Lee (1st of year) who tied the game and sent it to OT, where the Isles eventually lost in a shootout. Their bid for a comeback win came up just a bit short and it will likely be that way for this team on most nights as they do not have the look of a team that will make the postseason. Taking the loss against the Blues was Thomas Greiss, who didn’t have a bad game as he allowed just two goals on 35 shot attempts in the game. He is now 0-2 with a 4.36 GAA on the year. Jaroslav Halak is expected to get the start in this one and he allowed three goals on 29 shot attempts in a 6-3 win over Buffalo in his lone start this year. Last year, he was 26-21 with a 2.80 GAA overall, including 6-7 with a 2.89 GAA here out on the road. In his career, he has gone 88-94 with a 2.59 GAA on the road and 30-19 with a 2.56 GAA during the month of October, while against the Pacific Division he has gone 39-39 with a 2.36 GAA, including 8-5 with a 2.61 GAA against the Ducks.
The Islanders were 10th in the league in scoring last year at 2.91 gpg, while also ranking 16th in shots taken (30.2 spg) and 28th in power play conversions, converting on 15.0% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice they ranked 23rd in goals allowed, giving up 2.90 gpg, while also ranking 26th in shots allowed (31.9%) and 11th in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 17.6% of their chances.
Ducks Blanked At Home By Flames
The Anaheim Ducks started the season with a 5-4 comeback win over Arizona at home, but then they fell by a score of 3-2 at home to the Flyers and 2-0 at home to the Flames. They just couldn’t get any offense going in the loss to the Flames, despite the fact that they had 43 shots in the game. Those are very frustrating games to have and the Ducks had one. The offense was not great last year and it looks to be a be=it weaker this year so far. John Gibson did not have a bad game in the loss as he stopped 27 of the 29 shots that he faced and is now 1-2 with a 3.05 GAA on the year. Last year, he was 25-25 with a 2.22 GAA overall, including 17-9 with a 1.94 GAA here at home. In his career, he has gone 39-35 with a 2.03 GAA at home and 6-9 with a 2.58 GAA during the month of October, while against the Metro Division he has gone 8-16 with a 3.19 GAA, including 0-1 with a 2.40 GAA against the Islanders. The Ducks have just one player with more than one goal so far and that is Corey Perry, who has two. Rickard Rakell has one goal so far after leading the teams last year with 33. This is not a team with a great offense and will need to rely on their defense on most night.
The Ducks were a bit below average on offense last year as they ranked 18th in the league in scoring at 2.68 gpg, while also ranking 23rd in shots taken (29.6 spg) and 17th in power play conversions, converting on 18.7% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice were very good as they ranked 3rd goals allowed, giving up just 2.40 gpg, while also ranking 10th in shots allowed (29.6) and 4th in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 15.3% of their chances.
